Woolacombe Sands in North Devon has been awarded a Blue Flag by ENCAMS, which runs the 'Keep Britain Tidy' campaign. Woolacombe is a Premier Beach Seaside award winner as well.
The flags are given to beaches with good water quality and facilities, stringent safety measures and litter-free shores. Out of 82 blue flags awarded around the UK Devon got 16 and Cornwall nine.
Woolacombe beach comprises two miles of magnificent golden sand backed by sandy hills and the Woolacombe Downs. The vibrant beach is a popular favourite with families, especially in the summer months. There are ample facilities available including huts and deckchair hire and lifeguards are regularly on duty. Speedboats and jet skis are prohibited, but there are excellent facilities for surfing, windsurfing and canoeing.
